Cast and Crew: James Cameron

James Cameron, a pioneer in computer-generated special effects, was writer, director and producer of Titanic. The Canadian born Cameron began experimenting with 16mm filmmaking after he saw 2001: A Space Odyssey. A physics and English major in college, Cameron turned to filmmaking and landed a job with Roger Corman's production company.
There, he designed special effects and built sets for low-budget movies.

Cameron's interest in underwater filmmaking began with his film, The Abyss. Cameron and his crew invented much of their equipment, and the film included cinema's first computer-generated image. Cameron would later found the special effects company Digital Domain, with his brother, Mike Cameron. In addition to breathtaking special effects, Cameron is known for well-developed characters in his films -- a rarity in most sci-fi works. He's been greatly praised for bringing strong females to the genre. Of the six films he directed prior to Titanic, he wrote the scripts for all six and and produced four.

For Titanic, Cameron's involvement was even more profound. His contributions included:

writing the screenplay
diving 12 times to the Titanic wreck site
proposing the concept for special underwater camera equipment to film the wreckage
operating the camera during the deep dive expedition
directing
producing
drawing Jack Dawson's sketches, including the nude portrait of Rose
operating cameras during principal photography
editing the film
mixing/editing the sound
overseeing the video transfer
During the 1998 Academy Awards ceremony, James Cameron tied the record for most Oscar wins in one year. He received statues for producing, directing and film editing.
