Behind the Scenes: Scene Facts: Sinking
- It was originally written to have Lovejoy falling into the crack, and this was even filmed, but was eventually cut.
- Jack, Rose, Fabrizio, and Tommy needed a little time to run about 200 feet to where the band was playing so that Tommy could say "Music to drown by, now I know I'm in First Class." Cameron and Jonathon Evans Jones (Wallace Hartley, the bandleader) improvised the line "they don't listen to us at dinner either."
- The glass dome explosion was filmed 12/21/96, and cost was $500,000. This was the last scene shot before the cast went on a 5 week break.
- The first class dining saloon and the Grand Staircase were built on a hydraulic unit so that they could be submerged at different angles at different times.
- The stern section of the ship weighed 1.3 million tons.
- These scenes were filmed 3/6/97-3/12/97 and were the most expensive filming days in motion picture history.
- Jonathon Phillips (Lightoller) was first adlibbed saying "I'll shoot you all like dogs" and Cameron asked him to do it again, and the actor was so into the scene he didn't even realize what he was saying.
